From Hungary to Maine: Welcoming Nisha to Dark Point Kennel & News from the Yakutian Laika Club of America

At Dark Point Kennel, every dog that joins our program represents careful planning, long-term goals, and a deep commitment to preservation. This week marked a very exciting milestone for us as we welcomed home a young Turkmen Alabai female from Hungary; a puppy we had been eagerly anticipating for quite some time.

For us, the trip itself was an experience. Living quietly in rural Burnham, Maine, we are much more accustomed to dirt roads, peepers in the evenings, and star-filled skies than heavy traffic, crowded highways, and the constant lights of the city. Traveling south of Augusta is already outside our normal routine, so making the drive to Boston made for a long — and very different day compared to life back home on the farm.

A Special Arrival at Dark Point Kennel

Monday, May 18th, 2026 was a long day, but one we had been looking forward to for quite some time.

After months of anticipation, we traveled to Boston to welcome home our highly anticipated Turkmen Alabai puppy from Hungary, entrusted to us by our good friend, Patrik Nemeth. Importing a puppy requires a great deal of planning, communication, and trust, and we were incredibly grateful that her transport went smoothly.

Because I, Sydney, currently work full time, my husband met me at my workplace in Augusta before we made the drive together. We filmed parts of the experience along the way, and it made the day even more special to document those first moments.

By the following day, we had officially decided on the name "Nisha" for this beautiful brindle girl.

Nisha is an energetic, confident, and people-oriented puppy with beautiful movement and a strong presence already beginning to show. Since arriving home, she has been slowly adjusting to life here in rural Maine, including careful, gradual introductions to our Nigerian Dwarf goats. Guardian breeds thrive when allowed to settle in thoughtfully and build confidence naturally within their environment, so we are taking our time and allowing her to learn at an appropriate pace.

One thing we noticed almost immediately is how family-oriented and sweet-natured she is. Our Turkmen Alabai have consistently been confident dogs with stable temperaments and strong bonds to their people, and Nisha already reflects many of those same qualities. She has also proven to be especially attached to humans — which means she has absolutely no problem howling when she feels she should not be left out of the action.

We are excited to watch her grow, mature, and continue developing here at Dark Point Kennel.

YLCA Quarterly Newsletter

We also wanted to take a moment to recognize the recent YLCA Quarterly Newsletter, beautifully put together by Chelly Pemberton.

We have great respect for the direction the Yakutian Laika Club of America is moving in. Thoughtful education, breed preservation, and strong community involvement are incredibly important for rare working breeds, and it is encouraging to see the club continuing to support that mission.

Resources like this newsletter help strengthen the breed community, keep owners and breeders connected, and reflect the kind of care and dedication that moves a breed forward with purpose.
We appreciate the time and effort that went into creating it and look forward to seeing the continued growth of the YLCA.

You can view the latest YLCA Quarterly Newsletter by clicking the link below. We highly encourage anyone interested in the breed and the preservation community surrounding it to take the time to read through it.

Looking Ahead

Nisha still has a great deal of growing and learning ahead of her, but these early weeks are some of the most important in shaping a stable, thoughtful working dog. From livestock introductions and environmental exposure to socialization and daily routines, we are looking forward to helping her continue settling into life here in Maine.

Every import represents far more than simply bringing home a new puppy. It represents trust, preservation, shared goals, and a continued investment in the future of these incredible breeds.

As always, we are grateful to everyone who follows along with our journey and supports our program. We look forward to sharing more updates on Nisha as she grows here at Dark Point Kennel.
